Publishing outsourcing in India may be growing in high double-digits, but international fiction editing remains a far cry. Though some players say big-ticket fiction will follow suit, publishing outsourcing in India, as of today, is dominated by scientific technical and medical (STM) segment. High production costs, lower unit sales and complex, yet repetitive, formats are the primary drivers for outsourcing in the STM segment. The fiction and non-fiction categories have to deal with less format complexity but are high on confidentiality.
Moving the production of fiction books to India is not the major priority for overseas publishers as of now. Fiction books could actually be produced at competitive rates abroad and given the fact that complexity levels of the page layouts are low, there is not much technical expertise required to typeset them, says Harish Iyer, AVP (business development), Hurix. "For really big ticket fictional work like Harry Potter, confidentiality could be an issue," he adds. However, the fact remains that all kinds of work are being outsourced to India. The overall publishing outsourcing industry in India is estimated at about $200 million a year and is growing at 50% each year. "India has the potential to capture at least 20-25% of the premedia global market and 12% of other services like animation and design services," says Office Tiger senior vice-president (electronic content) Michelle Breault. Premedia services include pre-press and custom solutions that complement existing workflows or establish new state-of-the-art offerings.
Large publishers like Elsevier, Springer, Pearson, Thomson, Wiley, Blackwell, OUP and CUP are already present in India. "Now, small and medium publishers are looking at India as a cost-effective outsourcing destination," says Integreon vice-president (knowledge services) Lokendra Tomar. Outsourcing in the publishing segment has a long history and has been prevalent for over two decades now. Macmillan began its offshoring unit in India way back in 1977. Thomson Digital and Techbooks have been servicing international customers for over a decade. "It's only a matter of time before we see work in big ticket fiction and non-fiction books being outsourced," says Ms Breault. India, with its 100-year history of domestic English publishing industry, workforce proficient in English and cost arbitrage, is an attractive destination for publishers. "Cost savings is the primary driver for taking pre-press and production work offshore and clients also enjoy the fast turnaround," says Aquent vice-president (publishing services) Kimberly Schaefer. Most services in the publishing value chain like data conversion, editorial services, typesetting, image management, project management and CD-ROM preparation are done out of India.
